DSA Crecy War Sword Review

The Crecy is a unique sword based on an original piece dating back to around 1100AD, with it's most distinctive feature being the cocked hat pommel design.

While it is one of Darksword Armories heavier one handed swords, in this review we will be taking a look at how it handles, cuts and withstands a target that definitely gave it a run for its money!

Manufacturers Blurb:

"Although dubbed 'The Crecy War sword" ,waged on August 26Th 1346,this piece actually dates from 1250-1300. While similar swords were found throughout the 13Th c., shorter versions were commonly used by the English archers during the 100 year war. The most readily available description of the sword can be found on page 48 (plate Xa.13) of Oakesshott's "Records of the Medieval Sword", who dates the sword to the thirteenth century."
I've been looking at DSA's Crecy sword for awhile now.. I knew I wanted this one when I saw the first pics of it.. It has such clean lines and a good shape, reminding me of something Albion would make actually, so it did not take me long before I gave in and ordered it..

Like all the other DSA's I had ordered over the years, this one came very securely packed to protect the sword in transit.

Crecy War Sword

After opening it up and wiping off the grease, I sharpened it up myself (there is an option to have them sharpened by Darksword for a nominal fee, but I love doing it myself - makes the sword feel like it is mine! And in this case I used an accusharp and finished it off with 800 grit sandpaper to make it good and sharp).

Crecy War Sword

After sharpening it, I spent some time getting to know it with some dry handling and was quite impressed.

The fittings were all nice and tightly assembled. The leather work on the grip was well finished and comfortable and did not slip, and in the hand. And when in motion the sword flowed easily from one movement to another and felt very powerful and well balanced.

Even though this is one of Darkswords heavier one handed swords, I really did not notice it due to the way it is balanced, though after using it for an hour or more I could feel it giving me a decent workout.

While this may not be to everyone's tastes, I enjoyed the kind of force this well balanced and powerful sword can generate - and it was not long before I started to set up some different targets to test both its cutting ability and overall durability...

CUTTING AND DURABILITY TESTS

For my first cutting tests, I warmed up with 2 water filled jugs, one cut with the right and left hand.

Nice clean cuts, so I moved on to a horizontal slice against 4 jugs in a row...

No problems there either!

For my next tests, I should say "Please don`t try this at home!!!!" because it was time to do some durability testing...

I pulled out a metal trash can and really pushed the sword hard!!! I did some hard thrusts into the can over and over then I did some very hard powerful down cuts on the edge of the can, though little did I know that the the can had a reinforced quarter inch rim under the lip that it could not cut through!

I removed the rim, as I could not stand to not cut through the can, and continued to go to work on the can until it was destroyed...

After putting the Crecy threw all that abuse the sword held up just fine..

Crecy War Sword

The edge did not show signs of damage or edge rolling, nor any loosening of the fittings - just some very minor scuffs to the blade..

In fact all I had to do was buff out the blade a few Min's with my 800 grit sand paper and oil and it was as good as new again..
