FIND A SWORD SYSTEM RESULT:

"I just wanna do some backyard cutting for a bit of good old fashioned chopping stress release.. What's the most durable kind of blade I can get?"

Backyard cutting means a couple of different things: it generally refers to a sword collector who occasionally enjoys testing their swords on various inanimate objects in the privacy of their backyard, and is a favorite past time of many of the members of the SBG community.

But it also refers to those times when you just feel like (carefully) trimming the occasional sapling or other suitable plants that are becoming a pest while having a little fun while you are at it..!

That's backyard cutting too, and to do it both safely (for the sword and yourself), it's best to use the right tool for the job. And what tool says 'cutting things to pieces' like the Cold Steel Gross Messer (German for 'Big Knife'): the name says it all!

However, while some may derogitorily mention 'use a machete', this is actually a very fun piece of advice..! My own first 'sword' was a $7 Machete, and there are some pretty interesting variants on the market these days, such as the Latin and TWO HANDED Machetes (kind of like a huge sword/ax thing for around $20!) or more exotic blades like a Viking style 'Seax' and Greek 'Kopis' instead of the kind of boring thing you find at the local hardware store..

"Latin and Two Handed"

OVERVIEW: When it comes to great value for money, nothing can beat Cold Steels range of $14 to $20 Machete.. See how they perform here.

"Kopis and Seax Machete"
Cold Steel

4 Star Rating

PRICE: US$15 to $20

OVERVIEW: Another couple of heavy duty, low cost Cold Steel Machetes tested on hard targets with excellent results.

The only caveat - be VERY careful if you choose to use any kind of edged weapon in the backyard. One slip, and you can end up with a leg that looks like 'halfcalftoms' in the picture at the bottom of our Sword Training Tips page. Or worse..
