The Most Feared Celtic Sword
- The Falcata

The Greek and Iberian (Spanish) Celtic sword known as the Falcata may not be the most graceful weapon ever developed. But there is little doubt that this is one of the most devastatingly effective swords ever produced.

The simple design of this Celtic sword really does belie its incredible cutting power. Indeed, in an article in the now defunct Sword Forum Magazine Online, the Falcata is described more as:

very, very effective, but not at all graceful as most people believe that a sword should be. For its intended use, as a close in "chopper" there simply isn't a better sword. Period.
With a unique 'pistol grip' handle designed to help keep it in the hand after bone jarring impacts, this Celtic sword was fully capable of splitting a helmet, shield or human head open with one solid hit!

When it comes to modern reproductions of this fierce Celtic sword, there are really only two to choose from - the dull edged and slightly lightweight but more attractive version by Windlass Steelcrafts, or the sharper and heavier basic blade by Generation 2.

Naturally enough, considering the reputation Generation 2 has for creating incredibly sharp and durable blades - and the fact that both are around the same price (actually, the Gen2 version is slightly cheaper) my vote tends towards Gen2 as the best value for money choice for this Celtic sword replica.

Generation 2 Falcata
Review by Jean-Pierre Francoeur, Toronto, CANADA

The Generation 2 Falcata is an homage to the devastating cutting blade of the Ancient Greeks and the Iberian Celt.

Its shape makes it the perfect chopping weapon. In ancient times, the falcata was known to be able to sheer through bronze helmets and shields. This modern version is no different than an original would have been.

The shape of the blade (weight forward) combined with the weight (4 lbs) allow the falcata to slice through the thickest material.

"When well sharpened, it will slice through a phone book with ease!!!!!"

The Generation 2 Falcata has a fairly straight blade. Some other model had a "Kukri" type blade, which makes one wonder where the Ghurkha got the idea (Alexander the Great maybe?)

The only improvement needed for this sword would be the finish.

It lacks the attention to detail , just like most sword made in the Philippine (the CAS Iberia line has the same problem). The blade is polished mechanically, and the grinder marks are quite visible.

The handle is attached to the tang using brass pins of a different colour.

But at $155 U.S. these are minor setbacks. Overall, the Falcata is a great buy and a great functional weapon.

THE VERDICT

Historical Accuracy: 4/5

Fit and Finish: 3/5
Handling: 4/5
Structural Integrity: 5/5
Value for Money: 4/5

OVERALL: 4/5 (Excellent)
