ANSWER: Hi Cedric,

Well, personally I would recommend the Dynasty Forge or the Kaze. Both of these are excellent choices. There is one more that you may be interested in - which is a $699 Katana currently selling for $300 here

Not trying to sell it, as it will sell itself, but it is really such a good (once off) deal that you should seriously consider it as an option.

Hope this helps.

Consider carefully before you buy (part b)
by: Maria

Hi Cedric,

This is Maria, I wrote the comment above and I just wanted to add a few more things.

1) With the Zhisword, he will allow you to make the payment in installments, such as 1/2 up front and 1/2 when it's ready for shipping. However that means that due to the customizations that you would ask, the specifics of the blade's polish, geometry and sharpness, custom choice of the tsuba and other items the sword may take 8-10 weeks to forge and some extra time to ship to you.

(Thats the time estimate he gave me for the forging of my sword. I assume that you will be thinking carefully like me and would want a good quality blade for the money you are spending.)

2) SBG's sword may already be in stock and arrive to you sooner. Same thing if you order from Dynasty Forge. But with them you may not be able to customize as you want or if you can customize it may take longer to arrive into your hands.

I've looked at Dynasty Forge's site and they don't seem to have a lot of pictures up of their production blades, but I've seen some pictures of their swords on other sites and they seem to have a good quality also, they can be costly but in their own way worth the price.

Personally I am interested in their Daimyo 1095 line of blades, but they are double the price of the Zhisword. I'm waiting to win the lottery before I order one from them, or a bonus in my next salary :)

Take a look at what people have to say on Sword Forum International.

I'm not really a fan of Cheness though, someone I know bought one a year ago and the polish and geometry of the blade had a lot to be desired. It was sharp, that was a good thing, but he ordered one with a bo-hi and it was uneven. One side was slightly longer than the other and one side was slightly more to the back than the other, the kissaki was very rough and the blade was really heavy. But the blade was sharp, thats the only good thing I can say about it.

There are pros and cons to the choice that you will make, whether you order from Zhisword, Dynasty Forge, SBG, etc.

Consider carefully before you buy

Hi Cedric,

Just to inform you, the Katana that is on SBG for $300, you can probably get the same quality sword from Zhisword for $300 also.

The $499 sword on Zhisword that you are interested in will most probably come with synthetic silk (sorry it's not real silk but at least better than cotton wraps) and before you buy from Zhisword, contact them either by their email or skype and discuss carefully the customizations you want.

I recently ordered a sword from the, for the same price of $499 (extra $48 for shipping) with all the customizations I wanted, I took a few weeks to carefully make sure they understood what I wanted in my sword:
Quality of the blade and it's forging
designs and quality of the fittings
materials used.

Also, view this thread http://forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?t=78312 and the link on the last post of that thread: http://www.soe.ucsc.edu/~jhagen/Zhi.Sword/ because as you can see in those images, the quality of the tsuka wrap for the Zhisword is of higher quality than the one that Paul recommended for $300. And personally in my opinion the hamon of that Valiant Armory sword looks so regular and un-natural looking and the polish for the kissaki seems a little rough. I've looked around on the web and I heard that a T10 steel produces a better hamon than 1060 steel. I can't very well verify this statement, it's just something I heard.

So my suggestion is discuss with Zhisword first to see if he can forge the kind of sword you want for the same price of $499 (of course for that price you will hardly get a folded steel sword from them).

Anyway it's your money to spend so I can't force you to buy this or that, I'm just giving you information so you can think about it.
