cutting beach mats and goza

QUESTION: Are these 2 items supposed to be soaked in water before cutting exercises?

Thanks, Kit

ANSWER:Hi Kit,

Absolutely! I've seen some youtube vids where people cut them dry and they literally smoke from the heat generated! Not a good thing...

Generally, you can soak them from 8 hours to overnight depending on the mat. The best ones are available at Tameshigiri.com (Mugen Dachi company) - and are pretty much the industry standard for providing a challenging and conistent target. They also have lots of links and info about how best to use the mats.

Best,

- Paul

Tip for cutting beach mats
by: Kit

Thanks for your reply Paul. I'm reletivly new at this.
I've been cutting beach mats, much easier on the wallet. If one has access to cat tails, roll a stem inside the mat. It gives spine to the mat. Much easier to cut. I use 1 1/2 mats and it works well.
