"I'm really after a decent looking, Renaissance styled sword (real is best of course) to display to add a certain touch of class to the room I am decorating. Any suggesstions?"

Bone Handled Swept Hilt Rapier

A Decorative Renaissance sword really does add a certain je na sais qua above a mantlepiece, on a study wall or in lounge that no other sword can really quite evoke.

While a Japanese Katana can feel somewhat brutal and medieval sword too 'over the top', a Renaissance sword rarely looks out of place - and as anyone who collects swords knows, real (functional) is best - partly because it feels kind of funny proudly mounting a blade on the wall that has no 'guts' to it, and partly because every guest who sees it will always ask 'is it real?' and when you say 'er, no - it's just a decoration', there follows a somewhat awkward silence.

Sure, an actual antique would be best, but considering the cheapest ones are around $3,000+ (have a look for yourself at sites like Antiqueweaponstore.com) it is out of reach for those decorating on a budget - but luckily you can pick up a fully functional and beautiful replica for less than one twentieth of the price..

For example, Hanwei's Bone Handled Swept Hilt Rapier, which you can pick up for $160, more than looks the part. The same can be said for the Solingen rapier which can be picked up for as little as $133.

However, if you are looking for something a little more substaintial blade wise, nothing beats the appearance of the historical replica of Oliver Cromwells Mortuary Sword, which is around double the price of the rapiers, but double the blade too!

Recommended Decorative Renaissance Sword Reviews

"Solingen"
Hanwei Forge

4 Star Rating

PRICE: US$133 to $275

OVERVIEW: Another winner from Hanwei, while not perfect it is most definitely a stunning looking piece, though under the hood there are a few things that might put the more puritanical rapier enthusiast off..

"Cromwell Mortuary Hilt"
Hanwei Forge

4 Star Rating

PRICE: US$233 to $375

OVERVIEW:A historically accurate replica with ornate and attractive fittings, the Cromwell Mortuary has a functional blade ready to go straight out of the box.

If for reasons of safety you MUST have a decorative sword only (i.e. teenage kids, etc), you can buy some decent looking decorative rapiers for under $50 here at Trueswords.com, but if you can - for a little over double that price you can get something that is really worth so much more..
