Full tang, high carbon steel, assemble yourself... Worth the buy?

QUESTION: Full Tang Katana Kit

I know where I can get better quality swords... considering I have been through your site 100s of times. But I was wondering if you think this might be a steal of a buy?

ANSWER: The description is a bit vague on this site, but I have seen these swords before and am not greatly impressed.

They are 'ok' if you are a DIY fixer upper, but they rarely - if ever - assemble correctly out of the box (often the mekugi ana are misaligned, tsuka too tight/too loose, etc). The blades are pretty average quality too - worth the money? Maybe.. A good buy, sorry - but not really - you'd be better of getting a fully assembled Musashi or Masahiro or something.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

- Paul

Assemble yourself Katana..
by: Anonymous

now keep in mind that I have only a love, but no formal training. After purchasing a Cheness Katana (thank you SBG) I began noticing minor flaws. Everything I noticed could either be fixed or replaced, but the blade was a good blade. I thought about it a bit and finally purchased an "assemble yourself" katana. These blades are worth the money, aka, poor quality. HOWEVER, I didnt buy it with the thought of getting a good sword. I purchased the assemble yourself katana with the intention of practicing the disassembly and reassembly on it before I began making repairs/replacements to my cheness blade. In conclusion, these are cheap swords, but GREAT learning tools.
