FIND A SWORD SYSTEM RESULT:"I just love short blades that I can cut stuff up with - the tougher the better! Historical accuracy doesn't matter as much as raw functionality".
I must admit that if given the choice I personally love a functional ancient sword over a historical accurate one that just looks the part. And I am pleased to say that there are several great and very affordable swords to choose from! Narrowing down to the best of the best, there are basically there sub US$300 swords to choose from.: the Roman Gladius by Kris Cutlery, the Celtic Sword, also by Kris Cutlery and the Pompeii Gladius by Windlass Steelcrafts. The two Kris Cutlery swords were both awarded 5 stars by the official SBG rating system and are relatively historically accurate, utilitarian and very well made - while the Windlass Steelcrafts Gladius may not look quite as nice, but boy is it tough! To find the perfect functional ancient sword for some good old fashioned backyard cutting, check out the reviews of each of these three swords below.
Recommended Functional Ancient Sword Reviews"Celtic Sword" Kris Cutlery
OVERVIEW:Not the most historically accurate piece on the market, but arguably the most beautiful and functional. Blade is extremely well shaped, durable and sharp. Highly recommended.
"Roman Gladius" Kris Cutlery
PRICE: US$249 to $275
OVERVIEW: Probably the best combination between historical accuracy and functionality, Kris Cutleries homage to the Gladius is also an exceptionally strong blade.
"Pompeii Gladius" Windlass Steelcrafts
PRICE: US$149 to $190
OVERVIEW: One of the most historically accurate replicas at the low end price point, Roberts demanding tests also reveal that it is eminently sturdy as well.
While there are a few other 4 star swords that do a pretty decent job at backyard cutting, these three are my top picks.
I hope that you have been able to find a functional ancient sword that suits you. If not click here to return to our featured page on Ancient swords from the find a sword systems page on selecting a Functional Ancient Sword
