Practice partner finder
by: Razor

I don't know if I'm to late for this but I have a suggestion that I always wanted to see on SBG. I would like to see a practice partner finder. One of the many reasons I joined SBG, is to see if I could find like minded people that live close to me, so I could have more people to train, test cut with, and just hang out and talk shop. I already have met some good people here and it would be cool to meet some more.

I don't really want to copy what SFI already has. But something more like the "SBG competitions and members collections gallery," Where you can say where you live what group or organization you in or maybe you want to start or just do some backyard cutting. Member can post pictures and videos of them training or backyard cutting and write a little something about what they train with or style they do or would like to do. That way people who live close by could find someone to train or cut with and also when people or just visting came look up if someone is close by.

Or if that is to much, maybe have a little spot on are profile to do it on?

It would be nice if avatars could be uploaded as some sort of image file (jpeg, png, etc..) instead of an URL.

Video share sword forum.
by: Anonymous

Greets all,

Being a member for several years, I enjoy the site very much. I have a suggestion that may prove useful and heaven forbidding, entertaining, to say the least. every month when I get my SGB issue via this wonderous little villian called 'e-mail', I eagerly get the cover read then go for the scroll-down to the video of the month. this usually results in watching, as with many of you I'm sure, many of the films/clips in the area on those same subjects. so why not an area for us to submit photos and ultimately, video material of our hobby/lives to enjoy by us, for us. someting easy access and use.

How about a chatroom option?
by: Midori

Hey Paul,

I've thought many times over the time I've hung out on the SBG forums, 'it'd be so great if I could just chat with that fella who asked me the question!' I think a chat interface/chatroom application would be a great addition and would really help the more experienced members help the new ones quicker. It could also be great for discussion or even a guest speaker once in a while, kind of like kingsnake.com hosts. It's just a thought, but I think it would be both a helpful and fun feature to add. ^^

Arise new and improved forum
by: elfbard

Having enjoyed the high, lows, and informative features of this forum thus far,I can only wait and see what is to come. There are many knowledgeable members here and I think that between them and our honorable host and founder, the success of this forum will come.

Applicable law & forum rules
by: Federico Tyrawskyj

Simply making a short comment concerning the applicable law of the future forum and its rules. I think it would be very important to make sure that the future forum is held by a host with an applicable law that allows all the activities of SBG, and that the clauses of use of the forum don't restrict us. We should definitely not accept a sword of Damocles to be swinging over our heads, where everything could be lost on the whim of the new host (as it was this time).

Archive
by: Avery P.

Paul,
Is there anyway to remove only what is neccessary on the old forum, and then lock it so no new posts can be made? Use it an archive of sorts?

Ideas
by: Slayer

I'm sure my ideas have been mentioned, but I'm short on time and can't read all the replies posted.

My sugestions are, in short order-

1, quick reply box, like the old forum had. I LOVE this thing! I often get annoyed on forums like Myarmoury and CSS because of the harder method for posting... like Tom, I only need the quick reply, 99 times out of 100. This would be a key point for me.

2, better smilies! I find smilies to help express feelings greatly, and the old ones were... somewhat lacking. Check out COld Steel's forum to get epic ideas. ;-)

3, some sort of 'karma' or recognition feature is a great thing, IMO. I think it inspires helpfulness and contribution, if only subconsciously. This could be a very important feature, not to mention a useful one (denoting a person of good knowledge, such as Gaffer, Ricwilly, Tom K, etc), if my guess is right.

4, As others have said, more mods. James, Daniel, Dan Davis, etc- they're GREAT guys! But... they can't do everything. ;-) I think a few of the current VIP reviewers would be great for the job...

5,Free candy! :D 'Nuff said. 8-)

Hope this helps,
-Slayer

Suggestions
by: Sebastian

I think a couple of things should help our new forum ;

1) Active moderators, in larger numbers. The old forum had very good mods, but too few of them, allowing some unnecessary conflict to get out of hand. More good mods might help all members feel more welcome.

2) Retrieving all the reviews. I believe sword reviews are the lifeblood of SBG and I think everything should be done to retrieve them from the old forum.

3) A chat feature woul be cool, too !

for the new forum . . .
by: Tom K.

I really liked having the fast comment box at the bottom of the page so I could write quick and simple replies. most of the time I posted I only needed the quick post box and would have been annoyed by having to click a button and load a whole new page just to enter a short reply. I hope this feature returns.

I would like to see video embedding not just for Youtube but for other video sites too.

real time chat sounds great.

I liked getting karma but the system caused way to much heartache and trouble to be continued I think.

most of all I just hope all our old info, threads, etc can be archived and shipped over to the new forum so we don't have to start from the very begining. there is still a lot of good information i the old threads that I need to read or reread from time to time and it would be horrible to lose all that.

no matter what the features I think the new forum is going to rock as much if not more than the old one because it will be full of cool people. and Ricwilly. we definitely need a sub board or thread dedicated to all the crazy ricwilly pictures.

Dude, where's my post?!
by: Anonymous

Like, what was up with the karma? Dudes, I needed karmas, man. Someone post some reviews on this ebay katana I saw. Is the kokoro ichi still available, or what? I'm so lost...

Can't wait to see the new one!

I'm definitely looking forward to the new boards (and especially a new search function!). I've been a member of lots of online forums, but this one is somehow special.

Old Forum Proud Moment
by: fallschirmjager

Paul, I hope the 'new' forum will be reborn even stronger as independent from undue restrictions from host sites, of course an honorable forum will police itself by the very nature of it's leadership and members. I watched the old forum for years before signing in, one notable moment for the old forum in my opinion was when a small group of like minded forumites united to a common goal of helping a fine young man towards his goal of 'Eagle Scout' as started in thread by Avery. Some were not able to help financially but at least they posted comments and support for this effort, those are the kind of folks that will bring me back to the new forum :)

Search and Karma
by: Jeffrey (brotherbanzai)

Bummer about the site being down, thanks for all your work to keep it up and get a new one going. Not much I find in need of changing --The search feature on the old site never seemed to work very well for me. If I wanted to find an old post, I usually went through them a page at a time until I found a title that looked familiar. I always thought it was nice that the forum had a means of giving a person karma (pat on the back/thumbs up/ thanks for the help)but did away with the smite (I don't like you/ you're wrong/ be quite)button. Please keep the karma feature and don't bring back the smite, smite just leads to bad feelings. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with for the new site.

Offensive posts
by: Kumdoin

In a perfect world, "senior" forum members would always be nice and respectful to new guys. But unfortunately, there are always going to be those few arrogant people who just have to make sure everybody knows that "this topic was discussed 4 years ago and the thread is right here (posts a link), and just can't see why someone wouldnt want to dig through a hundred pages of threads to get one question answered. Or those who feel the need to challenge someone else's expertise simply because that person is new to this particular forum. Or whatever... The truth is, ya can't really do much about it unless it gets way, way out of hand. You can't ban someone just for being a bit of an a-double-s. So if it happens to you, just chalk it up to general jerkishness and let it roll off your shoulder. All that said, a sword and steel wiki would be freakin' sweet!

Do away with ranking.
by: Anonymous

The biggest problems I've seen and experienced on this forum is that people seem to treat post count as a sign that they have seniority. I do not post often (unless I have something worthwhile to say) but have been berated before by members who joined a year or more after me simply because they had a high post count, "so (they) knew better."

Not a knock at all against the moderators, all of whom seem to be very reasonable people.

About forums
by: SteelAlchemist

Just another couple of comments,
Firstly: Wikipedia of steel and swords = Awesome idea.

Secondly: Abusive posts can be an issue, and perhaps a (Report Abuse) button can be added to forum posts.

Thirdly: How customized is this new thread going to be? Are you simply going to find a new forum provider, or have a new server created just for Sword-Buyers-Guide.com?

Archive offending posts?
by: Anonymous

Dear Sirs/Ladies,
I was very interested to read of the new forum, and congratulate you on the positive vision for a place where respect and tolerance reign.
As a member of several forums (including this one) I would like to request that when "Trolls" or disrespectful insulting posts or threads are removed, that they be kept in some form for review by interested forumites if requested.
It can be frustrating (and give rise to conspiracy theories) when one finds a thread or discussion that has been censored or removed, with no way to see what the allegedly offending material was. "Trust me, I'm a mod and it was inappropriate." can feel disenfranchising and unsatisfactory for those of us without such moderator status.
Just a thought, and not specifically aimed at this forum.
Best wishes, happy slicin' and dicin'! :-)

CHAT FEATURE
by: Sir Tre

I read the previous suggestions. I also read the gazzette regarding this. Two things stand out here. One is Yellowbeard's idea on a wiki of steel. that would be outstanding. Two is that there has been some past problems with newbs starting a thread that some of the guys find redundant or just plain burnt out. but hey give them a break.... they probably haven't read the older threads since they are buried in pages upon pages.

as for disagreements... I read anonymous's statement... and was trying to figure out if that was before I joined. I have had disagreements with a member or two, while I was new. The thing about being new, is that they didn't realize that I had knowledge. So I simply let them know my knowledge and credentials and all was fine.

what I would most like to see on a new forum is a CHAT FEATURE. When we are online, we can real-time chat w/ fellow forumites.

wikipedia of steel
by: Greybeard

First off, this forum is my home on-line. My place of refuge from the shit-storm that is sometimes my life... a place where I can count on finding good, friendly, knowledgeable folk that love what I love - the blade, in all its innumerable incarnations. A place where I can ask sometimes "stupid" questions and not get disrespected for my lack of knowledge, and better yet, receive excellent answers from those who do know...

Which leads to my suggestion: a dedicated space for tutorials, how to's, definitions, etc... like a wikipedia of steel! With all the experience and knowledge of our forum members we could have one hell of a valuable site!!

Being attacked for innocent comment
by: Anonymous

I left this forum of my own volition after being attacked for posting my own opinion after reading postings on a similar subject and found myself repeatedly and malaciously attacked by some of the major movers on this forum. Paul Southern did intervene and told them to stop but when the attacks continued especially by some of the staff I refused to back down and finally concluded that they must have been condoned by Paul behind the scenes which I later found out was not the case but no action was taken against those staff members. As they were not disciplined and I left the forum I declared war. Finally, things settled down and I have made my peace with Paul over this issue and have ordered a couple of swords from him.

This was a case where the discipline of the forum was not vigorously applied regardless of one's rank in the forum which led to a great deal of unpleasantness all around. I would hope that the on the new forum the rules will be enforced against staff as well as rank and file,

civilized and respectful manner
by: Bob

This, of course, is a very good idea. That members will be required to conduct themselves in a proper manner. The only problem I see is who will be in charge of implementing this? Who will have the final say if someone is to be censured, or even banned? It is well and good that a select class of moderators will monitor activities here, but I believe that in the past it's been a moderator or two that has caused ill will. How about instead of employing Draconian measures and unilateral decisions, a public vote be allowed? Sort of like a court of law. A violator will be exposed, be allowed to defend themselves, and then the entire membership will be allowed to comment and call for punishment or aquittal. I know this may seem to be unecessarily complex, but it would be a more democratic way of dealing with troublemakers. If a person sees themselves as being out of favor with the majority, it may mean more to them then if it seems that just a certain moderator "doesn't like me".

Forums in general
by: Fr Douglas Skoyles SSC

I have avoided this forum as I do almost all forums as I find the general level of discourse in forums to be on the level of slightly retarded elementary school bullies. Life is too short (especiallyat my age!) for such nonsense. The few good forums and sites in which I participate have one thing in common: moderaters who have a clear short set of rules and enforce them with a will. Abuse is not tolerated and abusers are turfed as soon as possible. I would hope for the same in the new SBG forum. (None of the above applies to the former SBG forum as I have not participated in it.) All the very best with the new endeavours!

Looks Good To me
by: Dennis Holland

Being new to the Forum and to collecting swords for display throughout the house, something retirement has allowed me to do, I can't find much to take issue with. It has addressed aand hopefully will continue to help me in the purchasing of just the "right sword"for my interests. Some replies from others have been rather "curt" and at times demeaning just because my questions were considered by others to be just a sign of my "ignorance" of swords, in gereral. Well, being a "novice", I doubtless will ask what some will consider "dumb questions" but being suggested, by some, that I learn more then come back and talk intelligently or not come back until I have sufficient knowledge to contribute in a "meaningful way".

Agreeing with the search feature bug
by: Pariah

I'm going to go ahead and echo the problem with the search feature. It took me a while to figure out why nothing I searched was coming up, then I realized it was set to only look in the last week of posts. It may be just Proboards' way they default search features, but I would like to see this improve.

Search function
by: Steelalchemist

Hey, I love the forum but searching it doesn't work, since by default it only looks for posts from upto a week ago, and can't handle more than a year. This can be a real pain sometimes. Other than that it's all good.

A damn fine site
by: Will Horn

I like your site immensely, your reviewers post relevant reviews with all of the info that a sword addict like myself wants to read and view, in the case of videos. Please keep up the good work.
