FIND A SWORD SYSTEM RESULT:

"I'm a bit of a history buff, so I'm really looking for a historically accurate ancient sword"

You'll find a basic overview of historically accurate ancient swords on our site here that will go some way towards helping you understand the best choices currently available on the market, but let's look at some specific examples.

The truth is that most so called 'ancient swords' on the market are not even remotely close to what the originals actually looked or handled like.

To graphically illustrate what I mean, take a look at the picture below.

Gladii

The sword at the top is by Deepeeka, and is actually a pretty darned good approximation of what an actual Roman Gladius looked like. The sword at the bottom has the general shape of a Gladius, but that's about all..

Overall, it is Deepeeka of India, who make the most historically accurate ancient sword - primarily because of feedback from re-encators who were looking for a relatively inexpensive sword and complained to Deepeeka about having to modify every single piece to make it of use to them.. And surprisingly, Deepeeka took the feedback on board!

One of their most historically accurate pieces is their Maintz Gladius which you can see being tested by clicking on the link. While this sword is not anywwhere near as durable as many other replicas, as a historically accurate ancient sword it is almost perfect - and for around $150, not too hard on the wallet.

Another piece that is BOTH historically accurate, and also quite functional (and even if you just want to use it as a display sword, a sword that is also functional really brings it to life) is the Spartan Lakonian sword by Windlass Steelcrafts. (pictured below).

Windlass Steelcrafts Spartan Lakonian Sword

This sword has a decent bronze grip, properly proportioned blade and makes a great display piece. But as you can see from the review, is also very, very functional.

Recommended Historically Accurate Ancient Sword Reviews
"Spartan Sword"
Windlass Steelcrafts

4 Star Rating
Price: US$129 to $145

OVERVIEW: Quite a historically accurate replica, and extremely tough, well made and high quality - it is a MUST for anyone who wants a real Spartan sword.

"Maintz Gladius"
Deepeeka

3 Star Rating

PRICE: US$149 to $198

OVERVIEW: THE most historically accurate sub US$300 Gladius, but unfortunately not very functional by modern standards.

While both of these companies make quite a large variety of ancient world swords, these two are the most accurate - though you can browse various other styles here at Kult of Athena (plus they always sell their range for the lowest prices around, so it is not only a good place to see a decent selection, but the best place to buy them from too!).

I hope that you have been able to find a historically accurate ancient sword that suits you. If not click here to return to our featured page on Ancient swords from the find a sword systems page on selecting a Historically Accurate Ancient Sword
