FIND A SWORD SYSTEM RESULT:"The most important thing is historical accuracy. Too many so called medieval swords look like fantasy blades. I want either a functional replica of an original sword, or for it at least to be historically plausible (sheesh!)."
While there is indeed some cross-over between medieval swords that handle like the real thing as discussed here not all still qualify as historically accurate medieval swords simply because they look too 'modern'. But for the true purist who wants something that would hopefully not raise to many eyebrows or provoke a second glance if it was transported back in time, there are a few options.. Surprisingly, it is one of the budget sword makers - Windlass Steelcrafts who really do hit the nail on the head sometimes as they did with the Verneuil Sword which not only handles like the original, but considering its $200 price point, almost pulls it off apperance wise. While it starts to get a little more expensive, at about double the price, we find more historical accuracy both in handling and appearance with the Signature Series Kriegschwert which was designed by Gus Trim, Christian Fletcher and produced to their specifications by Valiant Armoury. This ones handling is carefully calibrated and spot on, but it also looks extremely authentic (minus the modern way the hilt is assembled). Finally, roughly doubling the price again, we reach the pinnacle of historically accurate medieval swords with the likes of the Ritter Sword by Albion. With all their swords designed by carefully and meticulously handling, measuring, weighing and copying actual museum antiques - there are quite a few 'sword snobs' who will buy nothing less.
Recommended Historically Accurate Medieval Sword Reviews"Verneuil Sword" Windlass Steelcrafts
PRICE: US$199 to $265
OVERVIEW: One of Windlass Steelcrafts best swords; extremely attractive, durable and with perfect handling. Very close to a full 5 star rating...
"Signature Series Kriegschwert" Valiant Armoury
PRICE: US$399 to $499
OVERVIEW: Fantastically light weight, beautifully balanced and extremely attractive - the Kriegschwert is an extremely popular sword, and while at $400 is relatively expensive, the value for money ratio is off the chart with these Christian Fletcher and Angus Trim designed blades.
"The Ritter" Albion
PRICE: US$775 to $800
OVERVIEW: Some argue that the cost to value ratio is not completely justified, but price aside, few can argue that these swords are about as close to perfect as any production sword can come...
No mention of historically accurate swords is complete without at the very least a nod to Italy's Del Tin. Even though their swords are not anywhere near as competitive as they used to be, and handling wise they are a bit on the heavy side, they still have a place in many a sword collectors heart and definitely look the part. You can read a review of their model #5155 sword and get an idea of what they are about by simply clicking the link.
