Making a Saya

QUESTION: I need to make a new saya for one of my katana's but Honoki is hard to come by, I was told Walnut would be fine, is this true... many thanks Ann.

ANSWER: Hi Ann,

I have heard of some people using Walnut wood with satisfactory results, but the closest wood to Honoki (Magnolia) is Yellow Poplar with a nice even grain.

For a nice free PDF guide on how to make your own saya and other fittings, check out the Construction of the Shinken in the Modern age guide.

Good luck and have fun! :-)
