regarding ontario 'black wind' and hanwei practical ninja-to

QUESTION: Hello paul...before i pose my question id like to echo what everyone else has said - that your site is an incredible resource, even for someone who knows a thing or two about budget swords...its obvious youre a man of integrity and very honest in your reviews...a quality i can definitely appreciate in a world where everyone wants to sell you something... (albeit you sound like a cheness advertisement sometimes xD its obvious youre very fond of their line and also you and them have something of a rapport, which is not a bad thing ^^)

gushy stuff aside, i was curious about the 'black wind' ninja/katana thing (( reviewed here ---> http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/battle-ready-ninja-swords.html by Mr. B Smith of usa )) ...it seems the vendor linked to at the bottom of the page doesnt stock this item anymore, and i was curious where the "best" place to buy this would be; im sure i could find it by myself even browsing through your 'preferred vendors' page, however you seem to have insight into these sort of things that i might not have (such as price, quality, integrity of vendors, etc...) and i also wondered if you personally had any experience handling this sword.

also, after reading your review of the 'hanwei practical ninja-to' (( reviewed here --> http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/best-ninja-sword.html )), ive decided to buy this sword and fit it with genuine same and a silk ito wrap, because i also am not too fond of the stock tsuka it comes with ( i hate the black faux ray skin as much as you hate the white :P ) i guess the question on this is: is there any chance youll be inclined to sell this sword through the sbg store, or perhaps one of your preferred vendors where youll get a small kick back for the recommendation? because i think thats only fair...

thanks in advance for reading my long winded mess of questions and comments :P and thanks again for your wonderful site ^^

ANSWER: Hi Ben,

I didn't know that eblades had stopped stocking the Black Wind... This sword is actually not stocked at any of the recommended vendors (in truth, it is very rare outside of knife vendors, which I am not very familiar with due to import restrictions to Australia that make swords easy to ship in, but knives very (very) difficult.

As such, I cannot really recommend any of the sellers of this item first hand but can only point you towards the list of stockists from Ontario Knife Co...

Sorry about that.

As far as the Practical Ninja sword goes, I do have a special agreement with the vendor I recommend where to buy this sword from at the end of the review. The first reason is that the price is competitive, they inspect before shipping, they have a 90 day guarantee - and SBG gets a small kickback to keep us going and growing - so everyone does get something good out of it. :-)

Anyway, I'll have to investigate about a reliable seller for the Black Wind, but if you happen to find out more please drop me a line so I can update it. :-)

Kind Regards,

- Paul

My first swords NEW
by: K. Miller

I must say I was very surprised to see the write ups on these blades. I purchased mine over 20 years ago, after I got out of the army. I got the katana and the wakazashi. After I received them I decided to start a sword collection so needless to say, they were never used or abused. I believe they might of been one of the first production swords that used those type of sheaths. Since my interest have changed over the years, if anyone would be interested in them, drop me a line up here in Alaska, my email is kurtrmiller@gmail.com

Katana BWS-1 with Kydex sheath.
by: Daniel

This is a worthy sword , I used to throw it through the air and stick it in trees , stop doing that after it bounced back one day , with the right swing it will go through a 4" tree with one swing , always bounces back to shape. I removed the cord handle and installed custom leather wrapping . If the zombies ever walk the earth I want this sword at my side. I have been thinking about parting with mine , just thinking about it though , ebay takes a big chunk . Is hard to part with something that can not be replaced. The shieth alone is rott , mildew and mold proof , you can run with the sword upside down and it will not slip out , many mounting options.
I would recommend this blade to anyone. newriverroadrunner@yahoo.com

Follow up to Black Wind Info
by: Anonymous

I received a responce from Cold Steel the other day, so I thought I'd share.....

[Thank you for your suggestion. I have passed this email on to our R&D department. I know that they have looked into "tactical katanas" previously, but I am not aware of the status of their research.

Our plate is very full for new products coming up, but they do look at all suggestions. If it is an item that will become part of our line, R&D will release that information when it is ready for production.

Again, thanks for your suggestion and your enthusiasm for Cold Steel.]

....fingers are crossed!

Black Wind Katana
by: Anonymous

Just thought I'd share my experience with you guys regarding this sword.
I've had one of these for over 10 years. Its been at my right hand on countless camping trips over the years, but its worn thin & to the white from all the use & sharpening. Fortunately, my dad has given me his. (I gave it to him years ago as a gift) I now have a replacement thats in great shape, except I'm hesitant to use it like I want to, just to try & preserve its metal. I need a replacement! So I wrote both Ontario knife company & Cold Steel. I know Cold Steel doesnt currently have anything like this in their product line, so I made a plea for them to introduce such a sword.
If I receive a response, I'll let you fellas know!

Info from Ontario Knife Company
by: Colossus

I contacted Ontario Knife Company directly by phone and inquired about the Black Wind Katana. They were officially discontinued as of 2 years ago due to "not being popular enough of an item". Odd, it seems to me that there are now people all over the web scouring for this sword. Perhaps the Black Wind was ahead of it's time. I believe that in recent years the 'black-ops commando' style of weaponry has become especially popular. Perhaps if Ontario Knife Co. just waited another 3 years they would have been happy to keep the blade in production. Interestingly, the representative from Ontario Co. told me that they WILL bring the blade back into production if a purchaser makes an order for at least 1500 copies! Perhaps a witty business man could make such an order. If someone did, there would be no competition for the sales of the blade, since no one else owns any! If anyone does have one, I'd still like to buy a copy. Email me at smithry@my.uwstout.edu Thanks!
