Semi-customizing of Hanwei's ninjato & thanks.

Greetings Paul,

Thank you for the possibility to write some sentences about the popular Hanwei's PC 1071 Ninjato, this time semi-customized by my preferences.

Following your suggestions,I have contacted Mr.Tommy Gilliam from Okinawaoutpost,Kentucky,USA,who have done a very good job in June this year. The only complaint I had against this sword in original condition was the short handle and weak fittings.

Surely I shall neither write a classic sword review, nor promote a straight shaped blade that has good quality in this case.

Many Ninjutsu experts claim that it is senseless to discuss about the topic, namely wich type was "authentic" ninja sword, the straight and short one or curved type. We know that all kind of Katanas were used by ninjas, regarding of wich type was suitable in particular combat mission.
This time I would mention and recommend Mr.Tommy Gilliam's services.

As we know, the PC 1071's Tsuka has been glued to the Nakago (despite one Mekugi),the Same was made of white plastic and the Tsuka-ito is in this case synthetic leather.

Mr.Gilliam's work on my sword consisted of:
-removing of old Tsuba and Tsuka
-drilling the second Mekugi-ana
-making of new longer (32cm) Tsuka with real ray skin Same and silk Tsuka-ito
-making of new square designed Tsuba of massive blackened aluminium (11cm x 11cm x 8mm).

The purpose of semi-customization was not only esthetic, but also in this way the longer Tsuka makes the sword handling faster.Furthermore this ninjato became suitable for disassemblement, when needed.

The price of this service was 570 USD,but I've got a perfect piece in whole and I'm very contented.

Thanks to you,Paul, for providing me the space for this review and thanks to Mr.Gilliam for his excellent work.

Just one question.

May I post pictures of this sword to your website and how?

Best regards:
Andor.

ANSWER: Hi Andor,

Wow, sounds like quite the overhaul! Nice choices too, and a dramatic improvement.

Now, as to posting pics - there are only limited ways at this time. Until I find a better way to upload them, probably the best way would be to simply upload them as multiple images in this section.

I am working on it though, so please bear with me.

Thanks Andor,

- Paul

Hello Paul,
Thank you for your answer.
As an appendix to my recent review of my new semi-customized Hanwei ninjato, here are some pictures.
I do hope people will like them.
As a final conclusion,I'd mention that it was worth to execute the 'overhaul' project on this sword, indeed. :)
Thank you and best regards:
Andor.

Tsuba
by: Anonymous

Where can I get a Tsuba like that?

handle length??
by: Darrell

Its nice, but how long is tang under handle?? I do this kind of work also as a blade smith.the samurai makers said quote " the handle of Japanese sword can be 1" longer then tang, never anymore". As it weakens handle. I thought about doing this to my hanwei, but if its not broke, don't fix it is my motor..one day when glue breaks loose on would be home invader, I might make new tsuka with ray skin.also the traditional method of securing is one mekugi about 1 1/2" from guard and file marks on nakago. Its functional the way it is.how long is your handle?? I'm just curious..Thanks, Darrell
