sword collector

i once ordered a sword on ebay... i know, bad start) from a seller named topicool. he ended up shipping me a peic of garbage that couldnt even cut, far from being worthy of bearing the name katana. there was poor comunication on his end and i never got a refund. his only defence was that he offered the sword "as is" and therefore was not applicable for a refund.

dont ever buy from him.

Can you give more info?

Depending on exactly ~what~ is shipped to you, there may be value in ~trying~ to sharpen it to retain ~some~ value left. Please give us a little info, and we can at least figure something out.

1) If you use blunt, unhardened, CHEAP files made in China, India, or cheaper companies, and just gently ~slide~ it accrose the cutting edge (not the spine, but the part that cuts), and if it quickly leaves marks, then the sword is pretty worthless

2) If you use a Nicholson file (or any file you by from a well known hardware store e.g. Home Depot) on the cutting edge and it easily leaves a mark, then the sword is not completely worthless, and you may consider sharpening it. If it actually takes WORK to get marks, then I'd think the sword ~can~ be quite sharp.

If you want to sharpen it, I suggest reading the sharpening guide on this site. For a concise description, here it is: use sandpaper backed by a block with a size you can comfortably hold with one hand, and sand/polish the edge. Progress from grits from 60, 100, 150, 200, 300, 600, 1200, etc. Be thorough with each grit. Finish with metal polish.

None of us like being ripped off. But when that happens, my favorite thing to do is try to salvage something back--if there's any worth in doing so. Let us know how it goes, and good luck!
