Sword repair, looking for parts

QUESTION: I purchased a sword from you about a year ago for my son. since then, I have acquired several more. I am in need of mekugi. (Handle pins.) From information from Sword Forum International, I purchased some from "Shadow of Leaves". These turned out worthless. (All too small of a diameter)

Do you, or do you know of any other place in the United States that might sell these? Its also been suggested to make my own from smoked bamboo. (almost as difficult to find).

Can you offer any help?

Walter Grzelewski

ANSWER: Hi Walter,

Shadow of leaves are a good choice, but naturally it all depends on the diameter of the mekugi ana.

Swords of Might has recently started stocking some generic ones for at $10 for 10 pcs. They don't state the diameter though, so you might want to contact them to make sure.

They can also be found on ebay sometimes. But I would recommend contacting Swords Of Might first to see if they can assist.

Hope this helps.

- Paul

Thanks. From the pictures, the mekugi looks straight, not tapered. Someone from SFI mentioned getting some Delrin and making my own. I have a rod on order and hopefully, I can get someone from the machine shop at work to do the taper for me.
I'm also starting to see Katana's with 1 bamboo peg and 1 metal peg. I might try getting some brass rods and trying to machine them also.
