crack in sword

QUESTION: I have the sword of tristan sword (purchased from medievalcollectibles.com) made by windlass steelcrafts. Anywho, after a little wear, it has a split in the metal, all the way through, about 9 inches from tip, however it is horizontal and parallel to the edge of the sword. Is this something i should fret about? I cant find much about this online except related to japaneese swords and this is called a ware? and there was mixed feelings as if it was a fatal flaw or not.

Anyways, like i said it is all the way through, i just stumbled upon it it was very hard to notice. it is about an inch long. Thanks alot! ps: tried to take a picture but you can't see if in pic.

ANSWER: Hi Caleb,

Yes, it is extremely serious and could cause the sword to splinter or fracture without warning if any further cutting is done.

Stresses on the blade will always try to relieve themselves through a weakpoint, so I think it is probably time to relegate the hardened old sword to a spot on the wall... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but better safe than sorry when it comes to swords...

Kind Regards,

- Paul
