Interview for the Sword Buyers Digest Online Magazine by Dan Dacombe with Shon from Kyberlight.com
Q: Hi Shon, thank you for agreeing to do this interview with us!
A: Thanks for the opportunity we are thrilled to talk about Kyberlight
Q: To start off, we were just curious – where did you get the idea to get into making lightsabers?
A: I have been a huge fan my entire life and I have been tinkering with sabers for the last 20 years. I looked around the industry and thought there was a need for a really customizable light saber that did not cost over $500. We wanted to make a great saber that every fan could afford.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about what makes your lightsabers different from the others on the market?
A: Our key points are that we offer 20 colors at the touch of a button, we offer an indestructible blade with a lifetime warranty, full sound package, total hilt customization and we are affordable.
Q: So how does the customization process work? Will someone need to have access to a lot of tools, soldering iron, etc? (talk a bit about the mechanics of swapping out parts here)
A: Not at all we wanted fans from 8 years old to 80 years old to be able to customize their sabers again and again in just a few minutes. We offer a variety of slide on tops, hilt sleeves and threaded bottoms so you can build the saber of your choice. All parts have a single allen wrench that can be used to screw and unscrew the various parts. You don’t have to be an engineer to have a great time.
Q: What parts are going to be available to customize sabers with when your website is fully up and running?
A: On day one we will 12 parts, 4 tops, 3 sleeves, 4 bottoms and a middle connector to make a 2 sided saber. Our plan is to have 10 additional accessories with in a few weeks of launching and then to offer new options each month including wood, leather, and many other fun options.
Q: The basic handle you guys offer can be customized by a wide variety of parts. Do you expect to add more customizing parts in the future? Will those parts always work with the basic handle you are currently offering?
A: See my answer above. Yes we plan to come out with new parts and options each month.
Q: Your kickstarter has been wildly successful – did you expect it would do so well?
A: We thought we would fund but the response has been amazing!! We ended up funding in just 5 days. I think people have been waiting for this type of saber.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about your organization – are you a one-man-band, or do you have staff working with you?
A: We have 3 partners and several contractors. As we grow we will add more staff.
Q: So I’m guessing that because you are doing this kickstarter that you are a bit of a Star Wars fan – what is a favourite Star Wars memory of yours?
A: that is easy. Not to show my age but I saw the original star wars in 1977 when I was 11 years old. I remember just sitting there at the end of the movie dumbfounded, I could not believe how cool it was. I went and bought another ticket and saw it again back to back. I ended up seeing it 13 times in the theater and a million since. I am a true blue fan!!
Q: What did you think of Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
A: I love it I thought the new characters were spot on it really had that New Hope feel. JJ Abrams did a masterful job!!
Q: Are you looking forward to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?
A: I have a count down clock to Rogue One. The new hope prequel concept it looks amazing.
Q: Where do you see your company going – any future plans about more customizations, more handles, other products?
A: Yes we are in this for the long haul. We have big plans for new parts, accessories, blades and much more.
Q: Thanks for talking to us today – best of luck with your business and May the Force Be With You!
A: thanks for letting us be part of the interview and my the force be with you always.
