SBG: Chris, what was it that first sparked your interest in swords?
Chris Howard: I never realized that I had an interest in swords until my early 20s, even though I was fascinated with the medieval times throughout my childhood. My interest was sparked when I received my first sword as a Christmas gift and thought it was the most incredible thing I had ever seen.
SBG: Do you remember what the first replica sword was that you ever owned?
Chris Howard: The first replica sword I ever owned was a decorative Tizona El Cid. After collecting for years and knowing this piece is a decorative wall hanger it is still very special to me. Had it not been for this piece I might have not realized my passion to open our first Reliks retail outlet, which has grown into Reliks Inc. and Reliks.com with my good friend Jamie Meiklejohn.
SBG: It's a tough question I know - but If you had to select just one out of all the swords you sell at Reliks.com as your personal favourite, which one would it be and why?
Chris Howard: Well you werent kidding when you said its a tough question. I have several favourites from different eras and cultures which makes it very difficult to select just one. So in my best effort to answer this question, I will have to say that The Towton made by Windlass Steelcrafts is amongst the top of my favourites (pictured below).
I have always had an appreciation for the way this sword feels and find myself showing this piece when anyone asks what a real sword is. This sword has exceptional balance giving the wielder the feeling that it is an extension of their arm as opposed to an object in their hand.
SBG: What's the most common question people ask you when they visit Reliks.com?
Chris Howard: Is it full tang? Is it battle ready? Is it sharp? This is the most common line of questions asked, which is why Reliks.com is focused on educating our customers to ensure they know what they are looking for. We want customers to make their selection based on facts and not just commonly seen and often abused quick sale internet terms.
SBG: What's planned for the future at Reliks.com?
Chris Howard: Reliks is constantly growing with new content and products in both the retail outlet as well as our Reliks.com website. We are continuing with our goal in helping our customers make educated decisions and bringing them the best products that our industry has to offer. We have been working with several manufactures as well as individual blacksmiths who are making exciting historically accurate pieces as well as Reliks exclusives.
